Blogging, E-mail, my Website & MSN

I have a website, a blog, and I have a myspace. I wasn't going to start a myspace because I thought the amount of shameless self promotion was disturbing and slightly narcissist.

But then I did and now I'm obsessed with trying to find more people I know on the world of my space and to get them to be my friend and to maybe write me comments.

Yes - I admit. I'm trying to pull the reigns back on all of it. I started to really feel convicted that it was not the best use of my time.

I started to be disturbed by how little "people contact" I was getting during the summer (because everyone was gone) and how much I was relying on virtual people contact.

Perhaps we are moving past the age of "The Crazy Cat Lady" and turning into "The Crazy Laptop Ladies".

I already had one relationship that was was predominately e-mail and it didn't end up being a fair and accurate representation of either of us. And I see too many friends delving into this and it makes me nervous. And I've already seen it crash and burn for numerous people. (but also turn out for many people)

Why can't we connect with people in real life? Why is it so much easier over the web?

And I'm not just talking about adult single people just looking for relationships. I'm talking the 19 year olds in my church who are obsessed with Hot or Not but then turn that into virtual relationships. I'm talking about teenagers who spend hours on msn with someone who lives next door.

We just all want to present our selves how we want to be seen and then get positive feedback.

I read Romans 13 this morning and I decided to apply it to my new My Space obsession based on two principles.

1. Above all - love others ( in other words don't spend hours seeing if people sent you a comment - comment on other people and encourage them)

2. Don't waste time - there is so much to be done for the kingdom of God right now that I need to prioritize time and also place my focus on God.

Oh - and on a funny side note. My Auntie Joyce isn't terribly computer savvy and she once asked me for my blob address. And then she told us that she boobled something the other day (google?) and it was just really funny and we like to talk about boobling our blobs now.

2 Comments:

  • I love your Aunt Joyce, she is such a joy! And it's an added bonus that she makes such cute comments. I promise that I'm gonna call you this week.
