Place Names

Have you ever noticed how we have a symbolic obsession with California right now? It's like our metaphor for everything in the poetic life of our music!!!
Some recent example
I'm going to California - going to change my life - sipping on tequila- night after night... (no clue who sings it)
Beverly Hill- That's where I want to be!!! - Living in Beverly Hills... ( once again - no clue)
All I wanna do is have some fun... Until the sun comes up on the Santa Monica Boulevard.... (Sheryl Crow)
Oh - I remember the time - when I left for Santa Monica - and you left me to believe (blah blah something about excuses for anything)
Then there's also the recent hit by the Chili peppers and then their old album Californication on top of that.
Then there's the Los Angeles Song by Death Cab for Cutie.
And the list goes on - if any of you want to send me more examples when you comment - I welcome you.
So what made me realize this was it seemed that when I was in California, no matter where I was, whatever street, it seemed I could sing a song to go with that location. Ok, maybe not quite soo extreme - but really, I was singing a lot.
I mean - I've lived a lot of places but I never had songs for them.
Hmmm...
Saskatoon - that's where I want to be - living in Saskatoon!!!!
Saskatchewan rest in peace - simultaneous release - Saskatchewan show your teeth - she's my priestess I'm her priest
All I want to do is have some fun until the sun comes up on Sanlitun boulevard !!!!
I'm going to Pincher Creek - gonna change my life - sipping on tequila - night after night!!!
Ok - so when I lived in China there were probably a million Chinese songs singing about Beijing and I just didn't know it because of the whole language barrier, and if someone sang about Saskatchewan most of the world would be like " oh shoot, my cd got scratched - I wonder when that happened?!" And when I lived in Santa Cruz Bolivia I could just listen to songs about Santa Cruz California and pretend.
But really! We do need to branch out a little. Let's romantasize another place for once - really! How about Minnesota?

Hey Kendra,
There is a song on Wide Mouth's newest album that starts "it's a lazy afternoon, on the east side of Saskatoon.." so there you are, a song about home here!
